It All Started with the Poppies
By Ashley

At the very beginning of April, we took my beautiful stepdaughter to play frisbee golf as part of her birthday weekend. While there, I noticed some gorgeous orange-colored flowers popping up. She informed me that they were the state flower of California, the poppy (pictured above). Orange is generally not one of my favorite colors, but these were soooo vibrant I thought that this flower might just change my mind. Soon after that weekend, I discovered a poem about poppies by Mary Oliver. I have included it below. šŸ™‚

In the weeks to come, California started to come into full bloom with this flower and ohhhh so many more. As you might have heard, the state got hit by storm after storm this past winter. Not so fun while it was happening, but we are now out of code red drought status, and the land is rejoicing. I decided to take a hint from the esteemed author of The Poppies and go marveling!

Please enjoy my pictures of these sometimes tiny, sometimes massive marvels mother nature has shared over the past few months.

And, because the poppy is where it all started, I did a little more research and found this website: BBC Natural History: Poppies. It is from the BBC, so not necessarily about the California poppy, but interesting nonetheless! If you have time, take a look and listen. You might learn something new!

Feel free to share any pictures of the marvels of mother nature you have in your area! Iā€™d love to see!
